Recording notes

A term used to describe an item depicted on an object/work or a subject covered. The purpose of keywords is to make objects easier to find in online searches. Several subject keywords can be assigned to an object. The data element should be repeatable and only one subject keyword should be assigned per element.

Keywords intended to place the object in a larger systematic or classificatory context should be recorded in the "Classification" data element. Terms given in the "Object type or designation" element should not be repeated in the "Subject keyword" element.

In addition to subjects and themes (in LIDO: <lido:subjectConcept>), individually identifiable persons or places depicted in an object or work may also be recorded as subject keywords. This should be done in separate fields so that they can be transferred to the LIDO elements <lido:subjectActor> and <lido:subjectPlace> during data export.

(lightbulb) CARE: Persons from the communities of origin should be involved in the cataloguing work to allow for different interpretation models and possible interpretations. Alternative vocabularies are helpful to mitigate the Eurocentric perspective (see Terminology recommendation).

Keyword or relation

Text (controlled vocabulary) and/or URIYesRecommended

museum-digital recommends that keywords should be used in singular, lemmatised form; no diminutives or word formations on '-like' or '-shaped' should be used, and keywords should not be concatenated or embedded in hierarchical structures. See: https://de.handbook.museum-digital.info. In PUQI, a data quality measurement procedure and manual for improving data quality in museum-digital, three to nine keywords are recommended, but there is no strict separation between 'Subject keyword' and 'Classification' as required in the Minimum Record Recommendation.
